Two James Spirits is a renowned distillery based in Detroit, Michigan, known for its handcrafted, small-batch spirits. They produce a variety of high-quality spirits, including bourbon, rye whiskey, gin, and vodka, with a focus on using locally sourced ingredients and traditional distillation techniques.
The Artwork
When it came time to selecting pieces for the exhibition at Two James Spirits, I ended up with 11 travel-themed and 4 miscellaneous. The travel series is on that I’ve mentioned before, but the next four were only really seen on Instagram.
Each of the areas mentioned on the travel posters is somewhere I’ve traveled to. I would typically have a significant building or area on my mind when I pictured the trip in memory. In most cases, I’d remember a general color scheme as well. I also felt like I could match a typeface to each spot. By putting all three of those ideas together, I’m able to always have a project as long as I keep traveling!

I also included a poster from Grand Rapids Branding Co. It’s the one that seems to be the most popular at art shows and shop pop-ups, so I included it for the show.
The Event
The opening reception couldn’t have been more fun! Two James really turned out an incredibly generous night, complete with food and a custom drink feature! It was gin-based, and unfortunately, that’s as far as my memory can recall.

Almost all of my coworkers at Mighty came out, and a lot of my friends as well. I even got two see two friends from the UP that were coincidentally passing through literally that night! The nerves of having to show personal artwork in front of friends and strangers ended up being worth ignoring. I now know to say “yes” to an opportunity and figure it out as I go…which I guess I was already doing anyway.
